EUROAIRPORT FREIBURG (MLH) INFORMATION

EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg (MLH) is an international airport located in the French Alsace, close to the French, German, and Swiss borders.

It is located 20 kilometers southeast of Mulhouse, France, and 46 kilometers south-southwest of Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany. It is 3.5 kilometers northwest of the Swiss city of Basel.

Because of an international arrangement from 1949, the airport is under the jurisdiction of both France and Switzerland. Several European airlines use the airport as a hub, and most of the airport's flight schedule is focused on leisure destinations inside Europe.

EuroAirport's terminal is a single, four-story brick building connected to a Y-shaped gate area. The parking garage entrance is on the ground floor (Level 1). In contrast, passenger check-in is located on the second floor (Level 2).

Check-in is on Level 3, split into Halls 1-4; the departure gates are on Level 4. Gates 22–32 are reserved for international aircraft departing from the United States and are located in the same region as gates 1–2, 20–46, 60–61, and 78–87.

There are jet bridges at six of the boarding areas. The rest are for taking a nearby bus or strolling to a nearby destination. As stated above, the land areas are distinctively separated into French and Swiss halves.

History of EuroAirport Freiburg

The 1930s saw the beginning of planning for a shared Swiss-French airport, but construction was interrupted by the war.

Swiss planners deemed the existing airstrip at Sternenfeld in Birsfelden too small and unsuitable for expansion because of the development of the neighboring river port facilities. Basel was one of four cities for which a main urban airport would be created.

Allschwil is a potential location for the new airport proposed for the Swiss neighborhood. It would have to be built over the French-Swiss border, which has prompted discussions with French authorities about creating a single airport that serves both countries.

After resuming in 1946, discussions led to an agreement to construct an airport 4.2 kilometers (2.5 miles) north of Blotzheim in France. France would donate the site for this project, and the Swiss canton of Basel-Stadt would pay for its development.

The Grand Council of Basel-Stadt agreed to foot the bill for a temporary airport even before an international treaty was signed (not until 1949). Starting on March 8, 1946, construction on what would become a quick airport with a 3,900-foot runway got underway. On May 8, the airport opened to the public.

The runway was lengthened eastward to 5,200 feet (1,600 meters) between the fall of 1951 and the spring of 1953. A customs-free road connecting Basel with the airport's departure terminal was built so passengers could avoid going through French customs.

In 1960, a referendum in Basel gave the go-light to the first expansion. Longer runways and more spacious terminals were added repeatedly over the years. In 1972, the length of the north-south runway was increased to 3,900 meters (12,800 feet).

The milestone of 1 million passengers per year was reached in 1984. EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg is a registered trademark that was first used in 1987.

In 1992, the airport served a total of 2 million passengers. This figure reached 3 million by 1998. Swissair's first flight to Newark took off in December 1998. Airbus A310s and A330s were flown on this route.

EuroAirport served as the carrier's hub, from which flights to forty different cities on Europe's periphery departed. So, people flying between Newark and those places may make a connection in Basel.

About the Saint-Louis, France

Saint-Louis lies in northern Switzerland, close to the border with Germany. It is home to the EuroAirport Freiburg. The Saint-Louis station and the Saint-Louis-la-Chaussée station provide service to the city along the Mulhouse-Basel line.

Saint-Louis is a commune in France that includes the former villages of Bourgfelden and Neuweg (also called Saint-Louis-la-Chaussée or Näiwaag in Sundgau Alsatian).

The French crown became increasingly invested in the governance and security of the country west of the Rhine at the Rhine knee below the territory of the Basel after the Thirty Years' War and the Peace of Westphalia.

During that time, France had conquered the Sundgau and other sections of the Alsace (which joined the Old Swiss Confederacy in 1501).

Louis XIV's continued expansion policy on the Upper Rhine included:

• The capture of Colmar in 1673.
• The defeat of imperial and Palatine troops at Türckheim.
• Plundering the town in 1675.
• The Treaties of Nijmegen in 1679.

He ordered the construction of the Hüningen Fortress at this strategic point in 1679. Hüningen, a fishing village, had to relocate so Vauban, a fortress architect, could build a military stronghold there in 1680.

The original settlers moved across the state line to the brand-new community of Village-Neuf, located on the main highway connecting Basel and Paris by Mulhouse. This border guard outpost and bar community was originally a part of the "new village" initiative of Hüningen.

Louis XIV formally called the town on November 26, 1684, around three years after the seizure of Strasbourg, the high point of France's program of annexation or politique des Réunions. From 1793 to 1814, the town was called Bourglibre (German: Burgliber).

Bourgfelden became a municipality in 1953, and the Blotzheim community of Neuweg (La Chaussée) followed suit in 1958. Since then, most of the airport's original territory has been incorporated into the Saint-Louis municipality.

Saint-Louis is home to the organization's headquarters and was the site of its founding on October 30, 2000, as the Communauté de communes des Trois Frontières. In 2016, the group evolved into an urban cluster.

While the airport is located in France, Swiss International Air Lines' headquarters at EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg in Saint-Louis is entirely within Switzerland. Switzerland is the only country where access is permitted.

This dry season lasts 8.2 months, from August 21 to April 27. With an average of 7.6 days receiving at least 0.04 inches of precipitation, February is the month with the fewest wet days.

Saint-Louis experiences constant precipitation throughout the year. St. Louis receives an average of 3.4 inches of rain in June, making it the wettest month of the year. When comparing monthly rainfall totals, February is the driest month, with an average of just 1.7 inches.
